Recipe Notes

Saffron syrup in the recipe above refers to saffron-infused simple syrup.  Simple syrup is merely sugar and water dissolved together, is easily and readily flavored, and is a key tool in the arsenal of scores of bartenders.  Michael Maller, the creator of this cocktail, suggests making this syrup using a pint of water to a pint of sugar with a "fat pinch" of saffron threads.  Allow the saffron to steep in the warm syrup for 20 minutes before straining.  Check out this article for more information than you've ever needed about simple syrups, including handy guidelines and creative ideas to get started.
